An in-depth look at the history of Vienna's oldest hotel

Guests can explore the historical ambience of the hotel not only through the precious antiques. A commemorative book devoted to its history documents the rich and varied past of the hotel. The book is on sale at reception. It spans over 400 years of history at the Hotel Stefanie, the former White Rose inn.

The Hotel Stefanie has existed in Taborstrasse, in the 2nd district, for more than 400 years and is thus demonstrably the oldest remaining hotel in Vienna . House and land registers show that a hospitality business has existed at this location without interruption for more than 400 years. The first recorded mention of an innkeeper ('Gastgeb') at this site dates back to 8 July 1600. For some 250 years, the inn went by the name of 'Zur Weissen Rose' and underwent numerous conversions and expansions. In 1888, Carl Witzmann, the great-grandfather of the current owner, acquired the inn and renamed it 'Hotel Stefanie' to mark the wedding of Crown Prince Rudolf to Stephanie of Belgium, which had taken place just a few years earlier. Since then, the building has been repeatedly expanded and refurbished.
